The term "Vanitas" is derived from a genre of still life artwork originating in the Netherlands to illustrate the fruitlessness of the search of pleasure, worldly goals and ironically even criticizing the pursuit of immortality through creating art itself. The internet is rife with different versions of this subject, each with varying symbols of our limited time (candles, smoke, watches), the inevitability death (skulls, rotting fruit), the collection of knowledge (books, maps) and power and wealth (fancy fabrics, jewelry, precious trinkets) and pleasures (musical instruments, wine goblets) I'll let my version speak for itself.
